When to Apply to Y Combinator: Choosing the Right Batch

When to Apply: Apply Early

YC recommends applying as soon as you have a founding team and an idea you are excited about. You do not need significant traction: roughly 40% of companies YC funds are ideas with no revenue. If you are actively fundraising before the next batch starts, you can apply now and YC may begin the investment process immediately rather than waiting for the batch to start.

There is little upside to waiting. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; submitting by the official deadline guarantees review. Late applications are still considered but are not guaranteed the same timing. For the full application flow, see our how to apply to Y Combinator guide.

How Many Batches per Year and When They Run

Y Combinator runs four batches per year: Winter (W), Spring (X), Summer (S), and Fall (F). Each batch is a roughly three-month program, often in person in San Francisco. Application deadlines fall a few months before each batch starts; exact dates are published on ycombinator.com and in the application portal.

When you apply, you choose which batch you are applying for. In most cases, apply for the next upcoming batch unless you have a specific reason to defer (e.g. you are a student using Early Decision, or you need to finish a commitment first). For batch structure and what each batch entails, read YC batches explained.

Choosing Which Batch to Target

Default: the next batch. If you are ready to start the program when the next batch begins, select that batch. Delaying by a batch rarely improves your odds; it only defers the decision and your timeline.

Students: Early Decision. If you are in school, YC offers Early Decision. You can apply in the fall of your final year and reserve a spot in a future batch (e.g. the summer batch after graduation). YC can fund you upon acceptance rather than waiting for the batch start. In the application, select "A batch after Winter 2026" (or the relevant window) and specify your preferred batch.

Already fundraising. If you are raising and need capital soon, apply now. Accepted companies can begin the investment process immediately; you do not have to wait for the batch start to receive the investment.

Life or timing constraints. If you or a co-founder cannot commit to the next batch (e.g. visa, family, or another obligation), choose the first batch you can fully commit to. Half-hearted attendance is not an option.

What If You Miss a Deadline?

Late applications are still reviewed. You will not get guaranteed review in the same cycle as on-time applications, and you may be considered for a later batch. If you miss the deadline for the batch you wanted, submit anyway and indicate your preferred batch; YC may still invite you to interview and, if accepted, place you in the next available batch or the one you prefer if timing allows.

Do not skip applying because you are a few days late. Submit as soon as you can and keep building; progress between application and interview matters more than which deadline you hit.

Conclusion

Apply as soon as you have a team and an idea; do not wait for traction. Target the next batch unless you are a student using Early Decision or have a concrete reason to defer. Check ycombinator.com for current deadlines and batch dates.
